Hay Net

HAY NET

Hay nets are useful as a distraction to your horse while you attend to small tasks around it, especially while plaiting your horse's mane, etc.

Using a different colour of twine as the drawstring for hay nets prevents it getting lost so saves time when you need to make adjustments.

Keep hay nets tied up in a high enough position to avoid your horse becoming tangled in them or possibly injuring itself. It also avoids the hay net dangling on the ground when it is empty.

Hang the hay net drawstring from a hook. This prevents the drawstring becoming too tangled as the net swings while the horse eats, and no matter how tangled the drawstring, the hay net can be unhooked easily.

Filling hay nets on your own can be very difficult. Make it much, much easier by fastening two hooks into the side of wherever your hay is kept so that you can hang one side of the hay net over them. YOu can then fill the hay net by holding the loose side of it with one hand and holding hay in the other.

You can make your own hay nets from twine. Depending on the size of net you want, tie 20 or 30 pieces together at one end into one big knot, hang from a nail and make each row by tieing a pair of pieces of twine alternately, i.e. using every second piece of twine to form a knot. When all the rows are complete, make a drawstring using more twine. To strengthen the finished hay net, pull every knot tight then heat each one up to create a strong seal.
