Headcollar

HEADCOLLAR

Your horse should not be directly tied to a fixed object, as horses occasionally panic and can injure themselves due to their own strength being exerted on their neck. Either tie them using a quick-release knot, or attach the end of the rope using string so that it will break under pressure.

In the stall or stable your horse may need to be tied up whether standing or lying down without getting tangled in the rope. A way to achieve this is to thread the rope through a loop on the wall then through a wooden ball and tied off with the quick-release knot or string as described. The weight of the ball will take up any loose length of rope.

You can make your own cheap but effective poll guard by cutting slits in a large piece of foam and threading it onto the rear part of the headpiece to protect your horse's head while travelling.

To keep the headcollar in place and also stop your horse getting out of it if he's wise to how to do it, add an extra strap from the top of the rear part of the headpiece to the throatstrap by cutting an old piece of leather, cleaning it then threading it through cotton loops that you attach to the headpiece and the throatstrap.

Making holes in nylon headcollars can be effectively and cheaply done using a heated nail, which will also seal the edges of the hole to prevent fraying or breaking.
