HORSE FEED
Work out the amount to feed your horse based on weight rather than volume. This gets around problems with part-feeds or short feeds and should be applied to hay as well.
You can add apples and carrots to your horse's feed as a change and a treat. Always make sure that carrots are sliced lengthways to reduce the risk of choking.
If you are having to administer medicine such as tablets or powder to your horse and are having difficulties, there are two simple methods. One is to put the medicine inside an apple or a carrot. The other, best with the powderised form of medicine, is to put it in treacle then put the mixture on the horse's tongue, for example with a wooden spoon. Most tablets could be crushed into a powder to do this.
Feed can be stored in dustbins and chains, rope or elasticated straps used to secure the lid in place to prevent rats pushing it off.
It is a good idea not to interrupt or disturb your horse when it is feeding as it can upset them, sometimes dangerously for yourself. Good practice is to feed your horse as the last thing you do before you leave it.
