Horse Girth
HORSE GIRTH
The girth strap should be the item you keep particularly clean and in very good condition to reduce any risk of infection and soreness to your horse.
The best part of the girth to use to check for tightness of the girth on your horse is at the bottom of his chest. Checking at the side can be misleading.
When your horse is saddled up, before you mount it is a good idea to loosen any skin that might be trapped under the girth by lifting each of his forelegs in turn.
Girth straps that can be washed in a washing machine are best wrapped in a bag, for example a pillowcase, to prevent the buckles getting trapped or damaging the rest of the wash.
If you are using the washing machine for this, to avoid accidents it is worth fastening the pins in the buckles up with string or wire to prevent them tearing anything or becoming trapped.
