HORSE HAY

You can reduce the amount of hay being wasted and make your horse digest it more slowly by using a hay net with smaller holes or by placing a number of hay nets inside each other.

Hay should have been soaked at some point before feeding your horse to reduce the likelihood of mould spores being ingested.

Hay can be soaked either in a hay net placed in a water trough or in a wheelie bin with holes in the bottom. An alternative, especially in winter, is to steam it, again using the wheelie bin and pouring hot water through it. Allow the hay to cool before feeding it to your horse.

Hay bales can be stored off the ground very effectively and cheaply by standing them on old car tyres.

If hay is being fed to your horse when it is in its field or paddock with no hay rack available, it can be stored in old buckets with holes in the bottom fastened to posts. If using hay nets, tie the hay net lengthways along any fence or gate to prevent it catching your horse's hooves when the hay net is empty.
