Horse Oil
HORSE OIL
You can make your own hoof oil cheaply by mixing light tar with vegetable cooking oil.
Baby oil or vaseline can be applied to your horse just before it enters the show ring to enhance its appearance, as it sharpens the features. Possible areas to use it are around the eyes, muzzle and on the hind quarters to add lustre.
Cooking oil, vaseline or baby oil can be applied to the relevant parts of your horse's body prior to exercise in the winter, while your horse is clean. It will stop mud from sticking or at least make it much easier to remove later.
Never apply oil, including hoof oil, on a dirty or dusty part of your horse as the oil will simply seal the dirt in, greatly increasing the risk of infection.
Before applying hoof oil, ensure that your horse's hoof is dry and clean. Cover the entire hoof, including the sole of your horse's foot to ensure the hoof is as protected as possible from dirt and debris.
