HORSE RUGS

Try to avoid throwing old horse rugs away. They always come in useful if kept clean. They can be cut up and used to repair other rugs, and have lots of other uses.

Warm rug liners can be expensive. Make your own from old duvets or ones bought cheaply from a market that can be cut to size and sewn. Velcro strips can be attached as breast fasteners.

To help reduce the likelihood of rug fastenings coming undone, fasten small rubber O-rings over the T-shaped clip and loop it through the fastener as you clip it together. It will help keep it in place.

If your horse rug is rubbing your horse even though the rug is fitted properly, stitch sheepskin pads into the right positions of the underside of the rug. Foam rubber pads stitched onto the rug where it rests on your horse's withers will also stop it moving as much.

If your horse rug is wet, dry it out by hanging it from twine slung across your stable or horse shed like a washing line. Alternatively, if the rug has ring or D-shaped fasteners, hang these over nails fastened into the wall of the stable.
