Horse Tack
HORSE TACK
If your horse tack has been bought secondhand or has become mouldy, ensure that you thoroughly disinfect it before you use it, for your and your horse's protection.
Always keep an eye on the state of your tack when it has been in a tack room, to make sure that the environment is dry without being too warm or it will cause the leather parts of the tack to quickly deteriorate.
The bit should always be washed after use. It can be easily cleaned and polished up using a pan scourer, which is ideal for quickly and easily removing the kind of dirt that accumulates on it
Tack should be taken completely to pieces for cleaning. This provides an opportunity to check for any build-up of scurf on the tack, and excessive wear including loose stitching. In the case of worn holes on straps, in some cases you can try and compensate for this in future by readjusting straps on the horse if it can be done comfortably and safely for you and your horse.
Make sure your tack cleaning equipment is kept clean and in good condition or else it will simply transfer dirt back onto your horse's tack. Regularly replace some items, such as sponges as it will be a cost-saving in the long term by not adversely affecting your horse's health or your safety.
