Horse Washing
HORSE WASHING
Care must be taken if washing your horse at all and it is generally not to be recommended unless you can ensure that your horse is dried out thoroughly. Washing then drying small areas at a time will help.
Your horse can catch cold and worse by cooling down when wet. Any moisture should be removed as quickly as possible using a sweat scraper, and great care must be taken with anything applied to the skin so as not to cause any reaction. Detergent is a no-no, but other ideas are discussed where relevant in other advice on this site.
During the summer, keeping your horse clean by bathing will attract less flies, but bear the above points in mind.
Shampoo your horse's coat the day before a show and not on the day itself, so that the hair has chance to settle again. A mane that has only been freshly shampooed will not be easy to plait up.
A blue rinse shampoo is very effective for keeping a grey horse's tail looking bright, clean and attractive.
